Consumer unit upgrades. Safe, modern, fully protected.

Whether your fuse board is outdated, dangerously full, or simply no longer up to the job — we replace it with a fully loaded, properly protected modern consumer unit. NICEIC Approved, Part P certified.

Your fuse board is the heart of your electrical system. Is yours up to the job?

A consumer unit distributes electricity around your property and protects each circuit with a breaker. Modern units use RCBOs — individual breakers combining overcurrent and RCD protection — so a fault on one circuit doesn't affect the rest of the house.

Older fuse boards with rewireable fuses or basic MCBs offer significantly less protection and can't meet modern BS 7671 standards. In many cases they can't legally be certified — making a replacement the only compliant option.

Full consumer unit replacement — supply and fit

RCBO protection — one breaker per circuit

Surge protection device (SPD) included

Existing wiring re-terminated and re-labelled

Everything in, nothing half-done.

Every consumer unit replacement is a complete job — supply, fit, test, and certify in a single visit.

New consumer unit supply & fit

A modern metal-clad consumer unit with full RCBO protection, correctly rated main switch, and a surge protection device (SPD) fitted as standard.

RCBO protection on every circuit

Each circuit gets its own RCBO — combining overcurrent and RCD protection in a single breaker. A fault on one circuit cannot trip the rest of the board.

Re-termination of existing wiring

All existing circuits are re-terminated into the new unit, checked for correct polarity and continuity, and relabelled clearly on the board.

Surge protection device (SPD)

An SPD protects appliances from voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes or switching surges — now a recommendation under BS 7671 18th Edition.

Part P Building Regulations

As NICEIC Approved, we self-certify and notify Building Control on your behalf. No separate council application needed.

Metal-clad only: We specify only metal-clad consumer units — the only type accepted under current wiring regulations. We don't install plastic-cased units, which are no longer compliant for new installations.

6 signs your consumer unit needs replacing

If any of these apply, book a free survey — we'll tell you exactly what's needed and give you a fixed written quote.

01

Rewireable fuses

If your board still has old-style ceramic fuses that you re-wire with fuse wire, it has no meaningful circuit protection and cannot meet current standards.

02

No RCD protection

Boards without RCD protection leave you exposed to electric shock risk. If you have two MCB-only rows with no RCD, this applies to you.

03

Circuits keep tripping

A board that trips repeatedly is struggling to handle modern electrical load. This is a sign the board is undersized for your needs.

04

Planning to sell or let

Solicitors, mortgage lenders, and letting agents increasingly require evidence of a compliant consumer unit. An upgrade avoids delays and failed EICRs.

05

EICR returned a C2 on the board

A C2 on your EICR means the consumer unit is potentially dangerous. It must be remediated before the EICR can be marked satisfactory.

06

Adding major appliances or EV charger

Adding an EV charger, a new kitchen, or a loft conversion often means the existing board doesn't have enough spare ways or capacity for the new circuits.

How a consumer unit replacement works, start to finish.

A consumer unit replacement is a clean, well-defined job. We isolate safely, work methodically, and have your power restored the same day.

Most consumer unit replacements take 3–6 hours from arrival to full restoration of power — we'll confirm the timeline when we quote.

Free survey

We visit, assess your existing board and wiring condition, confirm the best unit for your needs, and issue a fixed written quote. No charge, no obligation.

Isolate & remove

We isolate the supply at the meter, safely remove the old consumer unit, and prepare the board position. You'll be without power during this phase — typically 3–5 hours.

Fit & re-terminate

The new consumer unit is fixed in position, all existing circuits are re-terminated into the correct RCBOs, and the board is neatly dressed and labelled.

Test & certify

Every circuit is tested for continuity, polarity, and insulation resistance. The SPD is commissioned. You receive your EIC and Part P notification the same day.

Common questions about consumer unit upgrades

How long does a consumer unit replacement take?

Most consumer unit replacements take 3–6 hours from arrival to full restoration of power, including testing and certification. Larger properties with more circuits may take slightly longer. We'll give you an accurate estimate when we survey.

Will I lose power during the work?

Yes — the supply has to be isolated at the meter while we remove the old unit and fit the new one. In most cases, power is restored within 3–5 hours. We work as quickly as possible to minimise inconvenience, and we'll confirm the expected duration before we start.

Do I need a consumer unit upgrade or a full rewire?

Not always. If your wiring is in reasonable condition but the fuse board is outdated, a consumer unit upgrade alone is often the right solution. We'll assess both during your free survey and give you an honest recommendation — we won't quote for more work than you actually need.

What's the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?

An RCD protects a group of circuits — if one trips, it takes out all circuits on that RCD. An RCBO protects just one circuit, combining overcurrent and RCD protection in a single device. We fit RCBOs on every circuit for maximum protection and independence.

Will the work need Building Control notification?

Yes. Consumer unit replacement is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. As an NICEIC Approved contractor, we self-certify and submit the notification to Building Control on your behalf — you receive confirmation as part of your paperwork pack.

What certificate do I receive?

You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) issued on the day the work is completed, confirming the unit was installed to BS 7671. You'll also receive a Building Regulations completion certificate — the document you need for insurance, sale, and letting.

My circuits keep tripping — is that definitely the consumer unit?

Most home EV charger installations take 3–5 hours from arrival to commissioning, including the cable run, charger fit, app setup, and certification. We'll give you an accurate estimate when we survey.
